Three Common Auto Glass Repair Myths

Blog

If a rock flew up and hit your windshield, a crack or chip may emerge. If you have never had this happen before, you may pull out your phone and try to figure out what, if anything, you should do about the damage to your windshield. Unfortunately, there are many myths and untruths on the internet. Here are a few of the myths you may come across when trying to figure out what to do about a windshield chip or crack and the truths that you should know:

You Don't Have to Hurry to Fix a Crack

One of the biggest misconceptions in regards to auto glass repair is that you can take your time and get the chip or crack repaired when you have time. While you don't have to get the chip or cracked repaired the day it happens, you need to make an effort to get it repaired as quickly as possible. There are many things that can cause a crack or chip to grow. If you fail to repair the chip, that small crack in your windshield can quickly grow into one that impairs your vision while driving or requires your windshield to be replaced.

You Don't Have to Repair a Windshield Chip

If a rock or road debris hits your windshield, you may be left with a crack, or you may be left with a chip. One of the myths out there about auto glass repair is that chips do not need to be repaired. This is not true. Just like a crack, a chip can grow if it is exposed to the sun, due to glass expansion in hot or cold weather or thanks to road vibrations while you are driving. A chip needs to be filled in with resin to help to prevent it from developing cracks that stem from the chip.

A Windshield Crack is Only Aesthetic

The last myth surrounding auto glass is that a windshield crack is only an aesthetic issue. This is not the case. Your windshield serves an important role during accidents. The windshield helps to keep you or your passenger from flying out of the car. It helps to keep the car from caving in during a roll-over. And it helps to block air so the airbag can inflate under your face and properly protect you. If the windshield has an un-repaired crack, the structure may be weakened, which can cause the windshield to more readily shatter.

If a chip or crack is present on your windshield, it is important to take your car to an auto glass repair shop as quickly as possible. They can look at the chip or crack, determine if it can be fixed, and if it can be, fix it in a timely manner so it doesn't spread. If it can't be fixed, they can help by replacing your windshield for you.
