If you have a nail hole or other puncture in your tire, you may be wondering if a repair is possible. There are two different types of tire repairs that are available called tire patching and tire plugging. While many small punctures or holes can be repaired with one of these methods, not every tire can or should be repaired if it is damaged. Here are a few of the important factors to consider when deciding between tire repair or tire replacement.
The Location of the Damage
One of the factors that should be considered when you are debating between tire repair or tire replacement is the location of the damage. As a general rule of thumb, if the damage is on the tread, it may be able to be repaired. If the damage is located on the sidewall or the shoulder of the tire, it is not recommended that the tire be repaired. Neither patches nor plugs are designed to hold up on the sidewall or shoulder of the tire. Patching or plugging punctures on this part of a tire can lead to a blowout. As such, you should always replace tires with damage to this area.
The Size of the Puncture or Hole
Another factor that should be considered when determining if tire repair or tire replacement is right for you is the size of the puncture or hole. As a general rule of thumb, holes or punctures that are 1/4 inch in length or diameter can be patched or plugged. If the damage is larger than 1/4 inch, the tire should be replaced. In addition to the size of the puncture or hole, you also need to consider if the tire has any other repairs. A tire should only be patched or plugged no more than two times during its lifespan. If your tire has already had two smaller punctures repaired, no more repairs should be made.
The Age and Condition of the Tire
The final factor that needs to be considered when determining whether to repair or replace a tire is the age and condition of the tire. Every tire is different, and as such, may have a different lifespan. If your tire is nearing the end of its lifespan and winds up needing a repair, it may be better to invest in a new tire. However, if your tire is fairly new, and has a lot of life left, repairing the tire may be a better choice.
If you have a tire that is punctured, you should bring your vehicle to a tire repair shop. A tire repair shop can examine the damage, as well as the condition of your tires, and help you make an educated decision about whether you should repair your tire or replace it.
